Starsight by Brandon Sanderson

Spensa has left her home world to infiltrate the cosmopolitan heart of the Superiority. Starsight is a city planet filled to the brim with varying alien species, with kitsen being the most adorable of course.
Skyward was all about finding your true self and dogfights. Starsight is all about politics and AI existentialism.
The Superiority is divided between two citizenships: prime (intelligence) and secondary. These secondary citizens have enlisted pilots into the introductory Superiority space force in hopes of being upgraded to prime citizenship. Enter Spensa. Despite all of M-bots programming for stealth and infiltration, she isn't prepared to be a pawn in an age-old political rivalry between the KRELL (varvax) and dione.
Okay, let's take a second to talk about the dione. Had this book come out five years ago I would have probably been far more impressed. Publishing today made it feel slightly forced and cliche unfortunately.
There were plenty of shocks and plot twists that kept the pages turning, but I think I enjoyed Skyward more. This in no way dampens my anticipation for the next book.
