Before the Broken Star by Emily King

41145327You may remember that I was not the grandest fan of Emily King's first series "The Hundredth Queen." They started strong, but really petered out in story development. True to my word I picked up her new series as part of a Kindle deal.

The new series, "The Evermore Chronicles," show why you should give authors another chance. One series may not have been your cup of tea, but that may not hold true for all the rest.

We start here in a new world far, far away in myth and fairy tale. A young woman with a clockwork heart has set the dial on revenge. Enough to get herself convicted of streetwalking to be exiled to an inhospitable island of creepy tales of disappearance.

The sea voyage over followed by the prisoners arrival is just a non-stop flurry of page-turning activity. There's revenge, love, fear, laughter--an emotional smorgasbord. There's tons of character development in such a small space. But these are the things King excels at.

The improved world building was the truly impressive feat. I really enjoyed King's spin on the fairy tales of old with a twist of modern philosophical religion. I ended up buying the whole series on special--and so far it hasn't disappointed me.
