Alice Takes Back Wonderland by David Hammons

30190466. sx318 My mom had gotten me a subscription to LitCube several years back. While they were excellent gifts, the cost to items-kept ratio was not prudent. I'm not really a trinket person, and most of the novels were of mediocre quality. This one in particular had been sitting on my shelf for ages. And that had become unacceptable.

Out of some morbid curiosity, I always have to pick up a book that takes place in Wonderland. While I still remain opposed to retellings, I guess most others see it as a form of flattery. Historically folk tales were never the same story told twice so maybe that is what will end up happening to Wonderland; it will just become a conglomeration of folk tales.

David Hammons's version is a mash up of Victorian fairy tales (with a sprinkle from Italy). Alice and Peter Pan become a duo that must fight to save Wonderland by recruiting fan favorites from Grimm City. The catch--or maybe the twist? They are real people that are mere echoes of the fairy tales that were published on Earth that live in an alternate universe and time reached via a wormhole that is oddly shaped like a rabbit hole.

I don't hate the interplay of all the fantasy characters, and some of the little "echo" twists are interesting (steampunk pirates anyone?), but I just wasn't over the moon for this rendition of Alice. There are others I like considerably more, but this one was worth getting off my TBR stack.

Overall, I'm glad I read it, and I think you might enjoy it too.
