Sorceror to the Crown by Zen Cho

23943137This novel was decent. It was neither spectacular nor did it completely anger me. And to me, that is quite the compliment for this novel. It's been awhile since I read a truly average book. Kind of forgot they could be out there honestly.

The writing is old-timey British, which I think was my favorite part of the whole novel. I had to have a dictionary on standby for the fancy words that don't get used in daily language any more. I finished the book feeling more intelligent for all the lovely new words I learned. The whole read was reminiscent of Victorian literature (which I do believe the author was shooting for with the theme).

The downside was the plot really wasn't shining. For being a book about thaumaturgy, it held very little magic. The characters were charming but not endearing. The magic was present but not stealing the stage.

Some truly good concepts were there, but the writing just didn't do them justice. The whole experience was average. I enjoyed the read, but I don't think I will ever be rushing to reread this novel.  Definitely recommend it to others wholeheartedly, though.
