Aru Shah and the End of Time by Roshani Chokshi

This was a cute story. Despite being a hero's quest plot, the story was light-hearted and witty. I really appreciated the themes of heroism, imagination, and friendship.

Aru is a different girl from all the other kids in her class, she lives in a museum after all. She struggles to fit in with the ritzy clan around her. These struggles lead to a bad habit of lying. Once the story gets going, Aru starts to reflect on the consequences of her lies and what it really means to be a hero. The author takes a hurtful weakness and turns it into a helpful strength.

As an only child, Aru is used to spending time alone with her imagination. It isn't easy when she learns that her hero's quest includes Mini. And is Mini a character! However, through this forced cooperation, Aru gets a chance to learn about the different kinds of friendship and how to value a relationship.

I loved the Indian heritage, the witty characters, the moral lessons, and look forward to future books in the series.
