The Winter of the Witch by Katherine Arden

One is a tale of folklore from Russia, one a military epic, another a magical fantasy. There isn't a mashup forcing the different parts of the story to meet a genre, there is individual glory with each novel. They never felt formulaic. I was impressed, down right impressed.
I never really fell in love with any of the characters (I never quite connected with their spirits), but I didn't need that connection to not want to put the book down. It was the actual story that kept me going.
I haven't read a novel with that style of writing in a very long time. I was hooked. I can't recommend these novels enough for their original creativity and unique identity. What a conclusion to make one the best trilogies I've read all time.
