The Rise of Nine by Pittacus Lore
I have decided to wrangle my TBR pile. It has gotten seriously out of hand, and only shows signs of getting worse working in a library. I set myself a goal: complete all series on my TBR list that are fully published at this point. I will not start any new series!
So that brings us back to the "Lorien Legacies" by Pittacus Lore. They are a very mild Sci-Fi young adult series that has been entertaining but not what I'm craving to read. A lot of new characters get introduced with each new novel, which keeps adding perspectives and voices.
I don't hate it, but it seems overly elaborate. I understand that the idea is for the nine (secretly 10) teenagers to band together to avenge their lost home world so they may one day return and reclaim their heritage. Neat premise. Less neat in execution so far.
I do give credit that each individual Lorien is given a distinct personality, and a well written one at that, as well as a unique legacy. Four is an angsty fireball, 9 is arrogant anti-gravity, 6 is an invisible warrior, 7 is a deep sea creature who lacks confidence, and 8 is a teleportation clown. There is absolutely no confusing them. I love this about the series. I could live without the romances. Who honestly has time for googly eyes when you're on the run from a genocidal dictator?
We start The Rise of Nine split between 4 and 9 in America, and 6, 7, and 10 on the hunt for 8 in India. Flopping back and forth between locations and activities was smoothly handled and didn't hurt the pacing. The story didn't dawdle to get 4, 6, 7, 8, 9, and 10 all together in Nevada (but not Area 51 because we wouldn't want to be too cliche alien) fighting the main boss.
However, it goes swimmingly with a major defeat for both sides and a hasty retreat to regroup. So I'm guessing that the next novels will allow the Loriens time to go find 5 so they can have their powers unite to form Planet Lorien.
