The Spellman Files by Lisa Lutz

When your mother gives you a recommendation (and your library has it on the shelf, providing zero argument otherwise), you ignore that toppling TBR pile and all those little new icons on your Kindle. Especially when she knows that you have been completely drained from being nurse for the past three weeks.

I needed a break. Big time. And The Spellman Files provided it. In fact, it provided it so well my mother brought the rest of the series with her when she came to visit so I can keep my unhealthy relationship (can't-put-it-down late night reading when you are sleep deprived, excellent life choices) with the Spellman family rolling.

This start into the life of Isabel Spellman, PI, is fantastically sarcastic. Her family is dysfunctionally functional and etiquettely ambigious. Sometimes it's the stories that are closest to home that take us the farthest away from ourselves.

Great book, great laughs. Don't read it for the mystery factor, that was rather easy to solve right out the gate (though maybe that is a sign of the times rather than the writing skill), read it for the wit and entertainment.
