The Masked City by Genevieve Cogman

I went back to my original review to get a grasp on what had been happening as I remembered very little from three years ago. I didn't give myself very many clues to the plot, but it did fill me in on the impression left. Just as I predicted the series did indeed get better with the sequel. I still enjoyed the characters, with the addition of the absolutely wonderful Zayanna, and the continual mash up of genres. With a library that exists in all timelines, you can have stories from all the tropes. Quite enjoyable. That is the pro for the story.
The con is this novel had its own faults. While we didn't get the ad nauseum about the Library and Language, we did have the allusion to the first novel on repeat. I started to feel bad that it had been so long since reading the first novel, and that perhaps I really had missed something. This means the series benefits most from being read in order at once. Not my ideal set up for a series that has not even finished publication.
At the end of it all, I really enjoyed reading the story. The action, the characters, and the plot all blended succinctly and kept my full attention. I definitely want to keep reading the series.
