Aru Shah and the Tree of Wishes by Roshani Chokshi
There were originally five Pandava brothers. Aru Shah was used to being an only child so when Mini was forced upon her, she wasn't sure how she felt about that. Then she got Brynne in a whirlwind fight. Plus side, Brynne brought gorgeous Pandava adjacent, Aiden.
So one guess says that no matter what Aru feels on the matter, two more souls reborn are coming her way. Maybe then the devas will trust the newly christened Potatoes. Despite two successful quests, the Otherworld does not believe the gods when they are told the Pandavas have been reborn to defeat the Sleeper.
It's a PR nightmare out there, and Aru Shah may not be the best spokesperson. I mean, she has stopped the Sleeper at least twice now, do they really need to focus on that army amassing. Plus that pesky Sleeper seems to have contingency plans for his contingency plans.
Now his minions have captured an exceptionally important clairvoyant who will be able to tell him where the amrita is hidden. That's right, it means it is quest time again! The formula remains the same, but the scenery changes in an excellent imaginative tapestry of Indian myth that I continue to love learning about, and the characters met are something else.
On the quest, Aru Shah finds way more than she was bargaining for and has been tail spun into a myriad of thoughts. Her moral struggle is very real in this story. The depth of these books just keeps getting better and better. I highly recommend this series to middle grade readers!
