Feet of Clay by Terry Pratchett
It has been far too long since I took a Discworld break. The king of humor is also the king of mystery in this one. Someone has had the audacity to poison Lord Vetinari, and it is up to the City Watch to find the culprit. While the Watch segments aren't my favorite of Discworld, I still truly enjoy their stories. And the wit that Pratchett achieves with Vimes and Carrot is top satire.
What surprised me the most with this one was the mystery. It is pretty open that they are on an investigation finding "Clues" bit by bit. We get the usual red herrings, misdirection, and two separate investigations that really turn out to be one. But in all of this I really can't figure out who did it and how they did it.
Splashed in amongst the attempted murder investigation is the investigation of a soul. Golems work all over Ankh-Morpork, but are they really people. Not really, if you ask any citizen on the street. So what is the measure of a man? We take an awesome satirical dive into just that question.
Pratchett keeps the pages turning and the mind guessing until the very end. It made me realize I really missed the Discworld books and shouldn't go so long between them again.
