The Castle of Llyr by Lloyd Alexander
The Lord of Annuvin has been foiled again. Now Taran and companions have time to breath while Arawn licks his wounds and plots some other dastardly scheme to plunge the land of Prydain into everlasting darkness. While his villainy may not be overly original, his constant threat to the world makes it all worthwhile to root for the good guys.
Eilonwy thought with her freedom from Queen Achren, she could just continue running the landscape with Taran, Fflewddur, and Gurgi. Dallben has other news for her. Her people still exist on the island of Mona, and they want her returned so she may complete her training as a princess. Though she failed to complete her enchantress training, that does not excuse her from being a proper young lady.
Eilonwy is packed off to the Castle of Llyr, but Taran refuses to allow her to make such an excursion by herself. Arawn may have gone to ground, but that doesn't mean he is gone and danger is still lurking in the dark spaces of Prydain. Unfortunately, no one expected the plots to lay thick on the island of Mona.
Taran is paired with yet another youth that he does not have the capability to get along with in the form of Prince Rhun. The bumbling prince just continues to cause all forms of misfortune on the journey. Yet despite all the fumbling, Taran manages to reunite with Fflewdur.
As with book one and two, Taran learns there is more than meets the eye to all people. And his heart manages to grow just a few sizes more.
